I started messing with a few ways to build a caddis pupa. So, internet peoples, which one do you prefer?
First, I tried some caddis green ice dubbing, olive UTC wire, brown goose biot wingpads, a few wraps of hare ice dubbing, some hungarian partridge, and finished with a mix of superfine black and dark olive squirrel dubbing.
For the next one, I used the same dubbing, wire, and biots (except I clipped the tips), but I went with a chartreuse floss for the body. I also bought some of this Senyo's Shaggy Dub rubber dubbing-type stuff and I had no idea what to use it for. I mixed it in with the dubbing instead of wrapping the partridge hackle.
Mike,
ReplyDeleteBoth look good. I've tried a silver bead on some of mine, and it really has made a difference at times?
I like the more traditional looking one on top. Caddisflies like to keep their pupa on the "fuzzy camouflage" side, so I think that one looks a bit more natural. The slick body looks more midge-like to me. I'm sure either one would catch fish.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jay. I love Caddis and my first selection would be the top one. It seems to be more in proportion and a little more natural looking to me.
ReplyDeleteI like both Dub. The top one is obviously more traditional, but I'm not. I'd definately tie the bottom one to the end of my line first to see what happens. The purpose of tying new variations anyway right?
ReplyDeletethanks for the feedback. I threw on the first one on Sunday and lost it on my first cast. I consider that a sign..or something.
ReplyDeletegreat looking pattern! Did you like that rubber dubbing stuff?
